    Product Details

Madame de Pompadour was a member of the French court and also King Louis XV’s official chief mistress. She wielded considerable power and influence over Louis XV’s policymaking over a wide range of matters. Madame de Pompadour was not only a patron of the arts, but also the historical figure most synonymous with the Rococo movement.

Rococo's influence was first seen in the decorative arts and in interior design. Louis XV’s accession heralded a change in the direction of art in general. By the end of his reign, the rich Baroque designs that had once dominated French architecture and design gave way to lighter elements comprising mainly of curves and natural patterns. Rococo’s playful and whimsical designs were often seen as perfectly in tune with the excesses of Louis XV’s regime.

The aesthetic quality of Rococo is in many ways a perfect reflection of Madame de Pompadour. Like a delicate and gentle woman, the style is defined by S and C-shaped curves, asymmetry, and washed in creamy and pastel colors. Beneath Madame de Pompadour's elegant and graceful demeanor lived a bold and intelligent woman. Her period of rule was not only the high point of art, taste and fashion in French civilization, but also one of the golden periods of world civilizations.
