During the Hundred Years’ War, the English longbow was the ultimate nightmare for the French.  The weapon’s ability to stretch over infinitely long distances seems to puncture not only time and space but also struck fear into the French soldiers.  That is why the middle fingers of each English soldier was severed immediately upon capture.  Even if they were able to escape, they would never be able to fire those devastating bows again.  However, the English were not afraid and used this to mock their French enemy.  When the armies collided, it became custom for the English archers to taunt the French by proudly displaying their intact middle finger as they smirked, “Come a little closer if you dare!”

Despite knowing they were mocked, the French soldiers wouldn’t dare to approach in fear of the devastations that would inevitably rain down upon them.

Actually, we can learn lessons not only from the “middle finger salutes” from the English. Under Hemingway’s poignant penmanship, we have tales of an old manwho battled againstthe sharks.  Despite his hands being mangled by his fishing lines, he refused to let go.  Eventhe famous Van Goghfought against the world with his alternative depiction of a swirling sun and the night skyin.  The more pressure the world applied on them, the more they fought back….it’s in humanity’s very bones to defy the neigh-sayers.  They think to themselves, “the more you want to defeat me, the more resilient I become. I may fall along the way but I always get back up.”

Perhaps this is why the middle finger has become so popular around the world.  It stands for more than the easily understood, “Fxxk you”.  It also demonstrates a confidence of the spirit, an unwavering backbone.

Sometimes when you’re in a pinch, look up to the sky and just show it the finger----- what a refreshing and straightforward way to show your courage-----with an arrogance that mocks all your troubles.

    “Fxxk off! ”
