    Product Details

The Chou is a male clown role – generally amusing and likable. The Chou is identified by patches of white painted around the eyes and nose, and on occasions, outlined in black. This design is sometimes known as Xiao Hua Lian. Above this, the defining characteristic of the Chou is a small patch of white chalk around the nose.

In the Tang Dynasty, Emperor Xuan Zang loved Chinese opera and would choose to take on the Chou role. By this token, the appointed leader of an opera troupe has always been one who plays the Chou character.

The word “Chou” means “ugly”. Despite having no comeliness in appearances, the Chou is a very wise person. He is adept at analyzing situations and mediate in a way where any unconfortable circumstances are prevented. The Chou is highly adaptable and thrives in any environment.

From the outset, the Chou looks ordinary, perhaps even ugly. Just like the green tea – so commonplace that it makes up for 80 per cent of all tea consumed by the Chinese population. It seems too ordinary to be of significance. As humble as the common green tea is, it has plenty of benefits for one’s health and well-being. Just like the whimsical Chou, unremarkable at first sight, but has a warm and gracious heart.
