Amidst the tumult of the Wei-Jin dynasties, there were a group of seven individuals, Ruan Ji, Ji Kang, Shan Tao, Xiang Xiu, Liu Ling, Ruan Xian and Wang Rong known as the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove. They were exceptionally gifted in writing, music, arts and literature. Their works became a strong influence on the evolving culture and ideology in ancient China.

To escape the politics and strife of court life, the Seven Sages found sanctuary in the salving shade of the bamboo grove, spending their time chatting, drinking and singing. These gatherings became more than a meeting of like minds - they symbolized candor and spontaneity; celebrating beauty, intimacy and friendship through the crafting and sharing of art.

The Bamboo is deeply revered in Chinese culture as it is often depicted in paintings and poems; it is regarded as the embodiment of traditional Chinese virtues. Along with the Plum, Orchid and Chrysanthemum trees, they are known as the “Four Noble Ones”; and with the Pine and Plum, the evergreen bamboo is known as “Three Friends of Winter”.

The Bamboo’s unyielding and statuesque form is the image of uncompromising integrity and impartiality that reminds us never to covet or bully. On the inside, its uniquely hollow structure signifies humility, the need to remain teachable and modest in all our ways.

In times of yore, bamboo groves were planted in abundance, producing breathtaking vistas of serenity and peaceful beauty. The silhouette of bamboo trees swaying in the wind carries all the charm of a classic Chinese painting.

In the light, their jade green leaves quietly whispers effortless and innate elegance. As we are as much a part of nature as the Bamboo, let’s embody the scent of all its virtues, elegance and beauty.
